The story behind the celebration
In 1916, Ransom E. Olds, the man who helped put America on wheels, bought 37,541 acres of palmetto and marsh on Old Tampa Bay and set out to build a city from nothing. Then a 1921 hurricane washed his plans away. He went north believing Oldsmar was the greatest failure of his life, and he died in 1950 never knowing how the story would end.
He was wrong. The town held on. And on Olds' original drawings, one stretch of shoreline was set aside for recreation: a golf course, green space, room to breathe. He never built it. The town did, in a way he never imagined. It became the 400-acre Mobbly Bayou Wilderness Preserve, protected instead of paved.
In 2016, exactly 100 years after Olds stood on that shore, Army Ranger Joe DeRing stood on the same ground with an idea most people called crazy: a place where fear becomes something you learn from. The City of Oldsmar saw something familiar in it and leaped too. Today that ground is Empower Adventures, home to a 30-foot pole we call the Leap of Faith.

Mobbly Bayou Wilderness Preserve: the land Olds set aside for recreation, now home to Empower Adventures.
1916
R.E. Olds draws a city for 100,000 people, with parks and preserves sketched in from the very first draft.
1921
A hurricane sends a 14-foot wall of water through town. The plans wash away. The town stays.
2016
Empower Adventures opens on the ground Olds set aside, with the City of Oldsmar as a partner.
2026
Olds drew a city for 100,000 people. More than 120,000 have come here to leap.
Thank you, Oldsmar
A town of 15,000 that set aside nearly a third of its land for parks and preserves. That built an Olympic-caliber BMX supercross track. That never narrowed Olds' impossibly wide boulevards. None of it was the safe choice. All of it got built. This celebration is our thank-you to the mayors, city leaders, veterans, first responders, educators and neighbors who made the last 10 years possible.
“We want residents to look into their own backyard and feel proud of what we've built together.”
